On this episode of science I will present you one of the most beautiful looking but also powerful natural phenomena: The fire whirls. It is also known as the fire devil or fire tornado. This phenomena accrues when intense rising heat and turbulent wind conditions combine to form whirling eddies of air. It can reach up to 1000 degree C. and are usually 10-50 meters tall. However some are 1km tall and can have a speed of about 200 kilometers per hour. Usually they exist only for a few minutes but this can also range up to ca. 20 minutes. With this power fire whirls can be a real threat in some areas of the world.
